We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2020

This is the year when the to-do list increases every minute, plans keep changing until the last minute, and the pressure on finances, family and friends is consistently high. There is too much to do, too much to see, too many places to visit, and too many expectations to fulfill. The demands of work, family, friends, and even church make us panic to meet and exceed these demands, but at what price?

When is this season, a season of joy, celebration, giving and bonding, which turns into a season of fear because of unfulfilled expectations and financial pressures, a season of depression about losing a loved one and a season in getting others to make purchases? Merry Christmas is not so fun anymore. Instead of trying to bring Merry back for Christmas, I would suggest a different type of Mary. Jesus refers to Mary in Luke 10: 38-42 when he tells Martha that he is concerned and upset about the details of cooking while his sister Maria sits and listens. He chose a better way to listen calmly than to hurry.

Has anyone seen my calendar?

Take a moment to look at your calendar to see how busy special events, parties and meetings are. If it's like mine, it's scary and double booked for several nights and events. With all this going, there isn't much time left to think about the true purpose of Christmas, and even less time that you only spend with your immediate family. But you can choose the Mary way rather than the Martha way by adjusting your calendar to spend more time with the most important people in your life.

Can you have enough Christmas decorations? Yes, Christmas decorations are fun and prepare you for Christmas, but if you bother your husband that he does not help the outside lights, frustrated by children who damage favorite ornaments or bothered by cats that have damaged other ground trees, increase your stress. Decoration is meant to be fun, but if not, don't add it. Martha will decorate and remodel, Mary won't.

Of course we took another family photo with Santa Claus! Family photos are often exchanged throughout the year and are always full of smiles and happy faces, but rarely is a life full of smiles and happy faces. Actually, I still don't know about families who don't have problems in a certain year, but we pretend it's okay. This is especially offensive to those who lost a loved one last year and are still struggling with sadness. 

Take time this year to assess your traditions and expectations. Read the section about Luke for Mary and Martha and ask yourself if you are more like Mary or Martha. Then make a better choice.

Christmas is the most famous festival and a pleasant and sharing moment. This is time with family and friends for sparkling lights and brightly decorated gifts. Christmas is about love and sharing gifts and cards has become a universal way to communicate joy and congratulations. Let's express our desires differently this Christmas.
